[Review] The Help - Kathryn Stockett

Title of Book : The Help
Author : Kathryn Stockett
Publisher : G.P. Putnam’s Sons

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.
Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.
Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.
Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.
Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

Dewey's 24 Hour Read-A-Thon Wrap-Up [April 2014]

No comments :

So the read-a-thon for April 2014 has come to an end. It's a great experience participating in this event. I'd like to thank all of the people who make this happen, the hosts, mini challenge hosts, cheerleaders, and fellow readers! Okay, onto the wrap-up, I didn't write many updates on this blog, but I kept track my reading progress on a spreadsheet.

Total books read:
2 books and 1 short story
For One More Day by Mitch Albom
The Empress of Ice Cream by Anthony Capella
A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote (from Breakfast at Tiffany's and Three Stories)
*I also managed to read 2/3 part of The Tokyo Zodiac Murders

Total pages read:
976

Hours spent reading:
17

Mini challenge completed:
intro meme, jigzaw puzzle cover challenge, your name in titles, and closing meme

Snacks consumed:
candies, dragon fruit chips, chocolate milk, taro milk tea

It was fun and I must say, I'm proud of myself that I end up reading 900ish pages. I'll most likely participate again next October. So that's my wrap-up. What about you? How's your read-a-thon?

Read-A-Thon Hour #24 End of Event Meme

No comments :

wow, an hour left till it ends

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? hour 12 I guess. It was 6 AM, I just woke up and realized that I missed 5 hours of reading
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? probably short YA or middle grade books like a series of unfortunate events
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? I think it's already good the way it is
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? this is my first time participating and so far I really enjoy it. So I would say everything!
  5. How many books did you read? 2 and 3/4 (?)
  6. What were the names of the books you read? Breakfast at Tiffany's and Three Stories (I only read one short story, so I count it as 1/4), For One More Day, The Empress of Ice Cream, and The Tokyo Zodiac Murders (still halfway through it).
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? The Empress of Ice Cream. It was quite chunky and I didn't think that I would enjoy it that much
  8. Which did you enjoy least? Tokyo Zodiac Murders. The first half of this book is boring, but it's getting good.
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? -
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? most likely! the reader, of course and probably I'll try to be the cheerleader.

Read-A-Thon Hour #0 Kick Off Meme

an hour left until the read-a-thon starts!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Indonesia!

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
The Empress of Ice Cream by Anthony Capella, because it's a book about ice cream! I love ice cream.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
Does drink count as snack? I don't usually eat snack while reading, but I do drink hot chocolate or hot honey tea.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
Aside from what I've written in the About Me page, I'm a senior student majoring in Informatics Engineering and currently working on my undergraduate thesis. It's supposed to be finished on late May so this is my last chance to go all out on reading before I can really focus on my thesis.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
This is my first time! I'm looking forward to read the books of course, and interacting with people who also participate in this read-a-thon.

March Wrap-Up 2014

No comments :

Hi! I'm sorry for my late wrap up. I participated in John Grisham read-along in March because John Grisham is one of my favorite authors. I managed to read three of his books including A Time to Kill, which I love very much. So I had a pretty good reading month.

[Review] The Time of My Life - Cecelia Ahern

Title of Book : The Time of My Life
Author : Cecelia Ahern

Lucy Silchester has an appointment with her life – and she’s going to have to keep it.
Lying on Lucy Silchester’s carpet one day when she returns from work is a gold envelope. Inside is an invitation – to a meeting with Life. Her life. It turns out she's been ignoring itand it needs to meet with her face to face.
It sounds peculiar, but Lucy’s read about this in a magazine. Anyway, she can’t make the date: she’s much too busy despising her job, skipping out on her friends and avoiding her family.
But Lucy’s life isn’t what it seems. Some of the choices she’s made – and stories she’s told – aren’t what they seem either. From the moment she meets the man who introduces himself as her life, her stubborn half-truths are going to be revealed in all their glory – unless Lucy learns to tell the truth about what really matters to her.

Hi everyone! I know that at this point I'm supposed to be doing my undergraduate thesis or writing another chapter of my thesis proposal. Yet, here I am rambling about book I wanna have. What can I say, procrastination really is my best friend this semester. Anyway, Wishful Wednesday is a weekly meme which allows us to post about books that's been on our wishlist. This amazing meme is hosted by  Books To Share. Book that I'm going to show you for this week is ...
